What the records can prove about Hilliard's sale — and what they cannot yet tell us

DOCUMENTED. The estate transactions are on the record: a named 1840 inventory entry with a valuation, named 1855 estate proceedings and a reappraisal, an 18 October 1855 allotment into Share 2 to Susan and George Read, and a settlement recording a sale in 1856 for $1,200.

UNDER INVESTIGATION. Who purchased Hilliard in 1856. His physical movements after the 1855 allotment, including whether he was taken to Chicot County, Arkansas. The reported five-year separation from Bettie. The reported repurchase. The motive attributed to Bettie's enslavers.

The distinction that matters most here is between a transaction and a life. The settlement tells us an amount and a year. It does not tell us where Hilliard slept the following winter, who he was taken from, or what he understood about what had been decided for him.
